History Of Our School
The school that started as Thalagahamula School was like a divine gift for the Sinhala Buddhist children of the Mahara area. Mr. William Gomez Abeysinghe who inherited a large plot of land decided to donate it to start a school and because of that precious thought, on February 28, 1867, the school was opened there.

The first principal of the school was Mr. William and he was the first teacher too. The school which started with two teachers and eight students, quickly grew to become a large and popular school in the area. Later it became a government school where the education was given in the native Sinhalese language.Later in 1905, the school was moved to a wach spaclous government-owned lead It was the land owned by the Mahara resthouse. The school was restored in a 60-foot hall coveveled with coconut leaves under the direction of Mr. Hinkenda Jayathilaka in 1952. A large pot of land owned by the Mahara rest house was given to the school. With the suiper viion of Mr. A.A. Sevam and A.P. Perera A new building was on the new land. Even with only teaching until grade 8, it has become the best primary school in the area. The school became the best agricultural land in the area and won the agricultural tournament every year.
From 1867 to 1905, the school was developed under the dedication of six principals when the school was taken over by the government in 1957, it was renamed as “Kumara Junior School”. In 1993, it became “Maha Vidyalaya”..Ven. Halmillewe sri dharmananda did great service for the development of this school. 
In 2004, the era of the principal, Mr. T.B.C. Samaranayake started. He made a lot of upgrades and added numerous facilities to the school. Due to the rapid development, the school soon filled with over 2000 students and 65 teachers. Because of this development, the school was renamed as the “Kelaniya Presidents’ College” in 2007.
Until now this school has served the community of this area, producing balanced and competent individuals for the society.
